Invitation

The City University of New York would like to invite everyone to New York City for the 2011 Gotham Debates hosted at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. The tournament will be January 29-30, 2011. We will be hosting Novice, Junior Varsity, and Open Divisions in Policy Debate and a British Parliamentary Division. We extend our gratitude to you for supporting CUNY Debate.

Please note that this is a SEPARATE event from the NYC Round Robin hosted by Columbia on the same weekend.  We welcome any teams not accepted into the Round Robin into our Open Division, and we encourage Round Robin participants to bring additional teams to New York for the Gotham Debates.

John Jay is located at 445 West 59th Street, between 9th and 10th Avenues on the west side of Manhattan.  Please note that this is different than the past CUNY host-site at Baruch.

REGISTRATION:

Fees:
Policy Debate          $50.00 per team
Worlds             $50.00 per team

Judging:
Policy Debate              3 rounds of judging/team
               $100/ each uncovered team

Worlds            1 judge for 1 or 2 team entries,
N-1 judges for entries of 3 teams or higher
                                        $200 per each judge shortage

In accordance with CEDA policies, new policy programs should contact us regarding registration fee waivers.

Deadline for Registration is January 26, 2011 @ 8:00PM (or whenever NYU’s meeting has internet access that night).  We would appreciate an estimate of all anticipated entries by Friday, January 21st.

Policy Entries should be entered via debateresults.com; BP entries should be emailed to vikeenan@gmail.com .
As per the Business Office, all checks need to be payable to:
John Jay College Student Activities Association
445 West 59th Street Rm. 3128
New York, NY, 10019

PARKING:
There are many different parking lots around the college, most of which accept 15 passenger vans.  We are in the process of reserving space and negotiating a discount with those garages affiliated with John Jay, and we will be posting an update closer to the tournament.  Please budget for parking fees for each vehicle you intend to bring to campus.  Note that the discount in our registration fees is to assist in accommodating this expense.

We also encourage travel by train or public transit, and note that one of the tournament hotels is in walking distance of the tournament (2 blocks).  Anyone flying into NYC should stay at the Midtown hotel and should NOT rent a vehicle.

HOUSING:
There will be two official tournament hotels, one in New York 2 blocks from the campus, and one in New Jersey at a cheaper rate and more accessible to bus loads.  We will probably have a small coaches event in the NY hotel on either Friday or Saturday night.

Please note that we are also offering to house students and squads on a first come first serve basis, both with John Jay debaters and a few kind donations from other NYC schools.  Please let us know if you would be interested in this option.  Email Whitney Brown at whitneybnyc@yahoo.com to request housing accommodations.

New York:
The Holiday Inn Midtown @ 57th St.
440 West 57th Street
New York, NY, 10019.
The hotel has its own parking lot and the hotel is walking distance from the school.
