Greetings,
   The Gonzaga Debate Program invites you to attend the Jesuit Invitational Debate Tournament, held on the campus of Gonzaga University Saturday, September 10th - Monday, September 12th 2011.  The Jesuit, which was first held at Gonzaga University in the late 1980s as a Round Robin (then moved to St. Louis University and finally to Southern Illinois), was hosted from 1988-1998.  The tournament returned home to Gonzaga in 2003. The spirit of this tournament was always embodied in the outstanding competition and the first class, over the top hospitality.  We have changed the format from a Round Robin to a regular tournament, but nothing has changed about our hospitality.  Registration will begin at 7pm, Friday, September 9th at the Red Lion River Inn.  Rounds begin Saturday, September 10th at a civilized hour. We will also be hosting an event for our alumni and friends of the program on Saturday evening at the River InnTournament details are below but if you need any further information don’t hesitate to contact us at frappier@gem.gonzaga.edu. Entry Information
We will be utilizing the Jon Bruschke online entry system.  Online entry can be accessed at http://debateresults.com

Relevant Debate Information
-We will offer 6 preliminary debates on the 2011-2012 CEDA/NDT topic (Democracy Assistance) in an open division. 
-Adam Symonds, Director of Forensics at Arizona State will direct our tabroom.
-The time limits are 9-3-6 with 10 minutes prep.
-Judges must assign a winner and loser in each round. If that doesn't occur within a reasonable time frame the tab room will make a decision for you.
-All teams with a 4-2 record will advance to elimination rounds.
-All preliminary debates and double octas (most likely a partials) will occur on campus. Octas through finals will be held at the River Inn on Monday.
-All teams with a 4-2 record wills clear to elimination rounds. If a double octa round is necessary it will be announced at the Awards and will occur immediately following that gathering.

Case Book
With the introduction of the Wiki a "case book" authored by the tournament staff is a thing of the past. However, we will actively encourage, and even assist, all teams in posting their argument disclosure to the Wiki shortly after the tourney begins.
 
Fees
$125 per team. Make all checks payable to “Gonzaga Debate”
 
Judging
-Each school is expected to provide 3 rounds of USABLE judging per team. Each judge will be obligated through the octas. Those with teams in the octas will be obligated for one round beyond the elimination of  their team.
-We plan on utilizing mutual preference judging. If any of your judges are not usable in the pref system (i.e. we can’t get them in enough rounds to fill their designated commitment) the we reserve the right to use any of your other judges to fill in. 

Hotel Information

-The tournament rate is $95 per night for 1-4 occupants
-Reservations may be made by individual participating schools by calling Hotel’s Group Reservationist and requesting rooms under the  "Jesuit Invitational Debate Block".   (509) 323-7220.
-The hotel block closes on September 1st.  Please make your reservations soon.  If you have any trouble you can call our sales agent, Ruth Fitzgerald, directly at 509 777 6359.
-Hotel perks include: Free high speed internet and wireless  in all rooms, free parking; complimentary shuttle to/from airport.
-10 minute walk to the Gonzaga campus along a paved, lit walkway on the river. This  runs from the hotel to the Gonzaga campus.
-Short walk down the River to the footbridge across to River Front Park and downtown area.  Dining, shops, nightlife, copying, computer supplies  all walking distance from hotel.

Schedule
We are tweaking the schedule but will release that prior to the tournament. Round 1 on Saturday morning will start at 9am.

Transportation
Those of you from the district know how to get here.  For those of you flying in, you should flight into the Spokane International Airport (GEG).  Most major airlines service Spokane.  The hotel shuttle will pick you up at the airport.  For teams on tight budgets, you can likely do the whole weekend without renting a vehicle with only minor inconveniences.  Everything (hotel, campus, fast food,  kinkos (does anyone still go to kinkos?), downtown restaurants and bars, etc) is within walking distance.  We will offer evidence transportation from the hotel for those teams walking to the campus (5-10 minutes).  We will move your evidence Saturday morning and bring it back to the hotel Sunday night. This hotel is about a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel along the river path.
If you do rent a vehicle, here are the directions to the Hotel from the Airport.
-Leave Airport and follow signs to Spokane.  You will soon find yourself on I-90 East.
-At I-90 Exit 281 (Division St.) you should exit and stay to the left, this will take you back under the overpass
- You are now heading north on Division.  Immediately after you cross the Spokane River, look for the Red Lion River Inn immediately on your right.  Take a right at the first light after the river and turn into the parking lot.

Evidence Shuttle
We will provide an evidence shuttle from the River Inn on Saturday morning with the return trip scheduled for Sunday night. If you plan on using our evidence shuttle please contact Steve Pointer at pointer@gem.gonzaga.edu.

Other Notes
--Coffee and light breakfast fair will be available on Saturday and Sunday morning for all competitors and judges.
--Snacks and beverages will be available throughout all competition days in the AD Building for all competitors and judges.
--Lunch will be served Saturday and Sunday afternoon in the AD Building for all competitors and judges.
--The Tournament Hospitality Suite will be open each night of the tournament, Friday - Monday. Coaches, judges, and students who are 21 years or older may join us for refreshments.
