**Changes from previous years. new date. Due to university closure on MLK, Jr. Day, we are hosting a 6 round tournament. Different tournament hotel with $75.00 rate**

November 30, 2011

Dear Colleagues:

We invite you to join us for the annual Motor City Classic invitational tournament at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. This year’s tournament will be held on Friday, January 13-Sunday, January 15, 2012. Due to university closure on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we will be hosting a 6 round rather than 8 round tournament.

***FORMAT***

The tournament will employ the 2011-12 CEDA/NDT National Debate Topic.

Our tournament is sanctioned for ADA, NDT and CEDA sweepstakes points and offers competition in three divisions: varsity, junior varsity, and novice.

We will offer 6 preliminary debates in all divisions.

Please refer to the ADA novice and junior varsity and varsity eligibility standards.

Following ADA rules, “no more than or less than half of the teams competing in the preliminary rounds of debate” will clear for elimination debates, offering opportunities for more teams to debate and qualify for the Wake Forest entry. Brackets will NOT be broken. Room and judge availability may affect the number of teams clearing.

Hybrid teams will be allowed to clear. Maverick entries are not accepted.

Wayne State will enter teams and contestants as long as those entries do not create a bye in a division. Wayne State contestants (even in hybrid situations) will not be eligible to clear.

Additionally, the tournament also agrees to comply with the underlying principles of CEDA’s Statement on Sexual Harassment and Discrimination and the Statement of Ethical Principles.

***TABULATION***

We use a limited judge preference system as entries permit. Pairing: Rounds 1 and 2 are random preset. If entries permit, rounds 3, 4, 5, and 6 will be powered.

Speaker points will use the 30 point scale with tenths.

Three rounds of judging are expected for each team entered.

We have a *VERY* limited number of judges for hire. If you need judges, please contact us immediately, as we cannot guarantee the availability of judges as we near the tournament weekend. Please, do not assume that we have judges available for you without first telling us that you need hired judging. Judges may be hired at $30 per round.

We strongly request that all qualified persons attending the tournament make themselves available for at least some judging, both in the preliminary and the elimination rounds.

All judges are obligated through the first elimination debate on Sunday or one round past the point of their school's elimination from the tournament.

Judges are required to vote for one and only one team.

By the way, ask for the Wayne State University debate block when making reservations at the Best Western.

Hello,

Unfortunately, the number of entries for our tournament are rather low and even accounting for a couple of teams I would anticipate entering, we aren't going to have very many teams for the tournament. As a result, we regretfully are choosing to cancel our tournament.

Hopefully this gives you enough time to make some alternate arrangements for your teams.

Thanks again,
Kelly

In talking to the  hotel about cancelling our January tournament, the sales manager told me that about 11 rooms are still reserved under that block. She cannot cancel them unilaterally. If you made reservations with the Best Western Greenfield, please make sure to cancel your reservations.
