Missouri State University still has GTA positions available in the Communication Department. These positions include a fee waiver, stipend, and the potential to receive additional scholarship support if you wish to work with our debate program.

Although these positions are limited to individuals seeking their M.A. in Communication, there is potential for a position not tied to the Communication Department as well. If you are interested in either route, please contact me and start putting together an application.

What roles do debate GTA’s @ Missouri State play?
GTAs are involved in nearly every coaching role, including argument strategy, administrative decision-making, travel, and our summer institute. Our approach helps prepare GTAs with the skills they need to coach if they choose that path. The debate GTAs usually teach autonomous sections of COM 115, our public speaking course.

What do Missouri State debate GTA’s do after graduation?
Fourteen GTAs have worked with debate since my arrival in 2003, including three active. Many were not NDT qualifiers. Nearly all graduated within 2 years. Two are minted PhDs, and two more are approaching on-time. Three went into full time M.A. faculty positions, and one is a GS-14. Few terminal M.A. programs have comparable outcomes.

I’d like to work with your international relations program, or the D.C.-based Strategic Studies program, etc.
Although debate positions are tied to the COM department, students can take several hours in other disciplines. “Unofficial” GTAs (with positions outside COM) have received scholarship support in addition to the $8k stipend and free tuition.

How do I apply for fall 2013?
Time is tight, so you’ll need to act quickly. First, contact Dr. Eric Morris (gmail: ermocito). Apply for both graduate school (http://communication.missouristate.edu/communicationgrad/apply.htm) and a GTA position (http://communication.missouristate.edu/graduateassistantships.htm). You’ll need to have a 3.0 or better overall (or in the last 60 hours), a letter of application, and letters of recommendation.

I don’t graduate this spring!
We expect to have openings in fall 2014, and we have been able to arrange debate roles for more than our two “official” GTAs. If you expect to apply, get in touch and I will work with you to facilitate the process.

Missouri State just had a late re-opening of a GTA position which can be debate related (or just public speaking related, if you prefer).
If you are willing to act quickly to get an application together, contact Dr. Eric Morris (gmail: ermocito) for more details.

I'm eager to speak with graduating seniors who may be interested in coaching (even if only for a couple of years) while working on a Master's Degree is COM. Even if you aren't sure you want to do graduate work or COM, I am more than happy to talk (not just about our program). I have a couple of frequent questions addressed below:

Few terminal M.A. programs have comparable outcomes.

Although our formal debate positions are tied to the COM department, students can take several hours in other disciplines. We've had coaches secure GTA positions outside of COM, and then receive scholarship support for coaching on top of their free tuition and stipend.

How do I apply for fall 2014?
First, contact Dr. Eric Morris (gmail: ermocito). The sooner I know you are interested, the better your chances of securing a position.
Second, you'll want to apply by March 1, and ideally sooner. In a typical year, GTA offers are made on a rolling basis in Feb, Mar, and April. Although students have received offers later, this is rare.

We expect to have openings in fall 2015 as well, and we have been able to arrange debate roles for more than our two “official” GTAs. If you expect to apply, get in touch and I will work with you to facilitate the process.

MoState occasionally receives inquiries about students interested in other programs, including our DSS (Defense & Strategic Studies) program based in the D.C. area. Although the debate team's official GTA positions are tied to the COM graduate program (including the online MSAS program), we've had some past arrangements where students in other areas secured an unrelated GTA position and then traveled to tournaments in addition. Here is a list of current NON-debate GTA positions, and I would be happy to provide more details on the debate opportunity at my gmail (ermocito).

I'm eager to speak with graduating seniors who may be interested in working with our debate program while earning their MA. My GMAIL is ERMOCITO.

Although the "official" debate positions require pursuing a MA in the COM department (which could be done jointly with another MA outside of it), we've also had a few GTAs over the years who secured GTA positions in other parts of MSU and then received additional scholarship support for debate. In other words, you should shoot me an email if you might be interested and I will see what I can arrange.

If you are interested in a COM GTA, it would be good to apply by February 1st, which is our date of first consideration. We have a rolling deadline, but it is rare for GTA positions to remain open for more than a couple of months.

1-2 GTAs have worked with debate since my arrival in 2003. Several were not NDT qualifiers. Nearly all graduated within 2 years. Four are minted PhDs, four went into full time M.A. faculty positions, two to law school, and one is a GS-14. Few terminal M.A. programs have comparable outcomes.

One of the current GTAs is doing this, but with a GTA position in D.C. and scholarship support for travel.

Missouri State Faculty will start considering GTA applications later this month, so this is a good time to get in touch if you are considering joining us!
