Graduating Seniors,

With the generous support of the College of Arts and Sciences and the outstanding faculty in the Department of Communication and Culture, a debate graduate teaching assistanship line has opened for the Fall 2013 school year. The assistanship is guaranteed funding for two years for applicants to the CMCL M.A. program. There will be no extensions for the debate application, applicants must have their completed application in by the Jan 2, 2013.

The debate position is extremely competitive providing full tuition plus stipend. Debate assistants will be asked to teach one course (public speaking) in the fall of 2013 and then will not teach again for the remainder of their MA contract. The GTA will be asked to work 10 hours a week with the debate program. Assistants will travel to at least three tournaments a semester with the debate program.

Applicants for this position put this sentence FIRST on their Statement of Purpose(SoP):

"I am interested in the debate coach position." They should then use the rest of their SoP to tell us why they want to pursue their academic studies at CMCL and why the dept is a good match for them. They should NOT use their SoP to tell us about their debate experience. Instead, they should make sure to have a detailed account of their debate experience on their CV.  As you note, they will not be admitted on the basis of debate experience alone but on the quality of their work and their fit with CMCL's larger intellectual vision.

It is my great pleasure to inform you that I have recommended to the College of Arts and Sciences that you be admitted to study toward the M.A. degree in the Department of Communication and Culture beginning in the fall semester of the 2012-32 academic year. Although this decision is subject to final approval by the Dean’s office, I am confident this offer of graduate admission will be endorsed by the College, and will inform you directly of the final decision.
Additionally, it is my pleasure to offer you an appointment as an Associate Instructor (AI) and Debate Assistant for the academic year 2012-13. This assistantship provides a guaranteed annual stipend of $13,544.00. As an AI, you are also awarded a tuition fee remission with an estimated value of up to $24,617. It provides College tuition remissions for up to 12 hours of graduate credit per semester, plus 6 hours during the summer, for a maximum of 30 hours in an academic year. The stipend paid to Associate Instructors is considered to be taxable income; however, it is our understanding that the tuition fee remission is non-taxable. You will also receive free health and dental insurance coverage with an estimated value of $2, 075.60. You will be responsible for the non-remissible mandatory fees charged to all IU students.
Your appointment as an AI and Debate Assistant will be automatically renewed for the 2013-2014 academic year provided that you make acceptable progress toward completing your degree, that you continue to meet the academic standards set by the Department of Communication and Culture and by the College of Arts and Sciences for recipients of these awards, and that you perform satisfactorily your teaching duties as evaluated by your course director.
The Department of Communication and Culture considers the work of Associate Instructors a form of internship and an integral part of a graduate student’s academic and professional preparation. As an AI you will be asked to teach in C121, our basic public speaking course. Your duties as an Associate Instructor will be to teach three hours of the course during the Fall of 2012. Generally, we assume that each three-credit course will entail approximately ten hours of work per week. Teaching duties consist of all regular teaching responsibilities including holding classes at regularly scheduled times, holding regularly scheduled office hours, and attending and participating in regular staff meetings and scheduled by the course director.
In addition to serving as an AI in your first semester, you will serve as a Debate Assistant working with the Indiana University debate program under the directorship of Brian DeLong. Your duties as a Debate Assistant are included in the attached memo, but in general you will be expected to dedicate 10 hours of work per work during the fall of 2012 and twenty hours per week during the Spring of 2013. If your appointment is renewed for 2013-2014 you will be expected to dedicate twenty hours per week to your duties as a Debate Assistant in both Fall of 2013 and the Spring of 2014 with no teaching duties as an Associate Instructor.
The Department of Communication and Culture believes that substantive pedagogical training should be an integral component of preparing to enter an academic career; we make it our mission to see that you are successful in this endeavor. We begin our support for successful teaching with a weeklong AI training session held August 6-10, 2012. This training is mandatory for all new incoming graduate students. The C121 Course Director
holds daily sessions from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in which new AIs learn University and departmental policy, explore the resources available to them as teachers at IU, learn the syllabus and course structure for C121, and participate in panel discussions with experienced CMCL graduate students. In addition to this week of training, new AIs meet with the C121 Course Director weekly throughout the entire academic year to discuss experiences encountered in the classroom. With this yearlong introduction, graduate students are ready to face the challenges of teaching at the college level.
In addition to the AI training session that will take place from August 6-10, 2012, we will host a mandatory weeklong orientation to the Department of Communication and Culture from August 13-17, 2012. During this orientation week, you will have an opportunity to meet with faculty members and returning graduate students in both formal and informal settings, as well as to plan your full academic schedule. During the summer, you will receive additional information concerning both the AI training week and the orientation week.
To better acquaint you with our program, we are hosting a Departmental Open House for all prospective students on Friday, March 30, 2012. This visit will give you an opportunity to see our campus, meet the faculty and graduate students, and meet other students in your cohort. Please RSVP your intent to attend our Open House by Wednesday, March 7, 2012. Many of our graduate students are happy to host an overnight guest, so please be sure to let us know your plans.
This offer of multi-year financial support is valid only if you begin in fall 2012. However, the offer of graduate admission will remain valid for two years. Weekly allotment of Debate Teaching Assistantship hours

The list below contains the typical “average” amount of time a debate assistant will spend on debate work per-week. The two major time commitments for a debate graduate student include weekly debate work and tournament travel. I have subdivided the two sections to highlight that while tournament travel absorbs a substantial amount of time, over the course of a semester with three to four tournaments, the assistant will average about 20 hours a week.

Non-tournament weekly schedule
Tuesday coaches meeting: 1 hour
Tuesday team meeting: 1.5 hours
Two practice debates: 6 hours
Evidence and assignment production: 4 hours
Total Hour Allotment: 12.5 hours

Tournament travel every two to three weeks:
Friday: 4 hours
Saturday: 8 Hours
Sunday: 8 Hours
Monday 4 hours
Total Hour Allotment: 24 hours (Averaged out to 8 hours a week)

Tournament hosting preparation (2X a year)
Tournament logistics: 4 hours
Food reservation: 3 hours
Room reservation: 3 hours
Total Hour Allotment: 10 hours

Pre-season Camp
Pre-camp Evidence set: 40 hours
Camp days (4): 32 hours at 8 hours a day.
Total Hour Allotment: 72 hours

Explanation of each hourly commitment:
Tuesday coaches meeting:
The coaches meetings are a method for collaborating on team issues including: partnership, travel, and research assignments. Tasks are assigned to each coach for the week.

Tuesday team meeting:
The Tuesday meeting includes the entire squad. The purpose of the meeting is for travel logistics, assignment construction, presentations and discussion.

Practice Debates:
Teams must complete at minimum two practice debates before travelling to a tournament. The coaching staff for feedback purposes must observe these practice debates. With ten+ members on a squad an excess of ten total practice debates occur every week.

Evidence and assignment production:
Graduate assistants will be involved with evidence production. Their main role will be to guide and evaluate team assignments. Some graduate students enjoy the research side of debate and thus will also produce several assignments for the program during their stay.

Tournament travel:
Debate coaches will be asked to travel to three to four tournaments a semester. Tournaments are typically held on Saturday through Monday with Friday and Monday functioning as travel days. The times listed are for close/regional tournaments. Travel time could expand another 4 hours on Monday and Friday if flying or long drive times are needed.

Tournament hosting preparation:
IU debate currently hosts one tournament a year (spring semester). We plan to expand this number to two next year when we host the high school state tournament in February. Assistants will be used to assist with preparation for the events.

Pre-season Camp
Just prior to the start of school, the debate team will meet at the Bradford Woods campground for a pre-season session. Since the topic is released in late July, the first “evidence set” will need to be produced immediately prior to the start of camp. Assistants will be tasked with assisting the team in producing a base of evidence for practice debates.
