Political Science / Debate Graduate Assistantship

The Michigan State University Department of Political Science seeks competitive applicants for a graduate assistantship affiliated with the Debate Team beginning in the fall semester of 2013. The award is available for Ph.D. candidates in the discipline, is funded for five years and includes a tuition waiver, student health insurance and competitive stipend.

The assistantship has responsibilities to both Political Science and Debate. During the first, fourth and fifth year of study, the assistant will work with Political Science and fulfill responsibilities to that department, including teaching. During the second and third years, the assistant will be associated with Debate and have responsibilities to the team, including argument construction, assisting team practice sessions, and traveling to some tournaments. Satisfactory progress toward earning a degree is a condition of maintaining the assistantship.

Students interested in this opportunity must complete the normal application process for graduate study in the Department of Political Science.  The process is described on the Department webpage.  Please indicate an interest in the Debate Graduate Assistantship in the required Statement of Interests.

The deadline for applications is January 2, 2013.

For more information on the degree and program, please visit: http://polisci.msu.edu/index.php/phd-program/welcome or contact Karen Battin, the Graduate Program Assistant (battink at msu.edu; 517-355-2167). For information about the Debate Team, please contact Casey Harrigan, Director of Debate (harriga8 at msu.edu; 517-432-9667).

Hey,

Casey made the formal posting for the new Grad Assistantship position -- but I wanted to take an additional moment and spell-out how wonderful of an offer could be. It's a pretty great deal:

1. You can enter this program with a BA and exit with a PhD in five years.
2. That means it's open to a range of folks -- from current seniors to folks that finished undergrad a while back.
3. yes, tuition waiver
4. yes, stipend
5. yes, opportunities for student health insurance.
6. yes, relationship to debate program, travel opportunities, and opportunities for additional summer employment.

MSU Political Science enjoys especially strong ratings in publications that rank these sorts of things.

The deadline is soon (Jan 2nd) -- so it does require a little legwork over the winter break.

If you have ever considered debate being part of your post-undergraduate experience.... or if you like political science -- submit an application.

Let us know if you have additional questions (questions are probably best-directed to Casey at the email address he listed).

 Best,

   Will

Speaking as a Political Scientist, I just want to say that the MSU Political Science Department has a top-notch reputation within the profession.
