Tournament Dates: February 19th  – February 21st , 2010

Host Site: Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois

Buildings for Debates: All tournament rounds will be held in the Orrington Hotel or at Kresge Centennial and University Hall on the Northwestern University Campus. Transportation to the campus for evidence and individuals will be provided.

Lodging: We have a block of rooms at the Hotel Orrington. The address for the hotel is 1710 Orrington Ave., Evanston, IL 60201. Rooms can be reserved by calling 847-866-8700.  Our sales contact is Kathy Koestering and she can be reached via e-mail at kathyk@hotelorrington.com or by phone at 847-556-7927.  Please reference the Northwestern Debate Block when making reservations. A fee of  $115.00  plus tax has been secured for rooms housing up to four people. The hotel is located within steps of the Northwestern Campus. Free internet access is available in all rooms and public areas.   Reservations must be made no later than Friday, January 18 to secure the tournament rate.

Judges: Each school is required to bring 2 judges per team. Except for extreme circumstances, we cannot make accommodations to find you hired judging. If you are in a situation where judging will determine if you can bring a team to the tournament, please contact Ron Stevenson (waynedebate@hotmail.com) or Will Repko (repkowil@msu.edu) immediately. All judges are requested to provide a judging philosophy statement. Posting those philosophies to www.debateresults.com is the best way to ensure full access to all participants. Alternate sites such as http://judgephilosophies.wikispaces.com/ are also encouraged. If you have any trouble with these archives, please send it to lukephill@gmail.com

Fees: Tentatively the registration fee for each team is $50 which covers 2 students and 2 judges. There is an additional $10 charge for any person in your group who is not covered by the above mentioned fee (e.g., researchers, extra coach, extra judge). These fees cover 2 breakfasts, 1 lunch, 1 dinner, snacks, supplies and parking. There is the possibility that the fee will be increased slightly to offset the additional costs of hiring judges at the tournament as discussed at the 2009 District meeting at JCU.

Transportation:  As is our practice we will offer both evidence and people shuttles to campus.  Evidence will be loaded Friday night after debates have concluded and delivered to the competition site in the morning.  People shuttles will run from the hotel to campus and back before rounds 3 and 7 and after rounds 6 and 8.

Entries: All entries for the tournament should be entered electronically on debateresults.com. When entering, please make sure that your dietary notes—i.e., who’s vegetarian, vegan, etc.—are up-to-date

Contacts: Tournament entry, administration and District V issues and concerns, contact Ron Stevenson (waynedebate@hotmail.com) or Will Repko (repkowil@msu.edu).

For hotel, travel, meal or other hosting issues, please contact Luke Hill by phone at 678-852-9280 or by email at lukephill@gmail.com.

Parking:  Should you drive to the tournament or decide to rent your own ground transportation upon landing, you have several parking options in Evanston.  You may valet your vehicle at the Orrington for a cost of $18 for each 24 hour period.  While we have worked with the Orrington staff to speed the valet process, an event this size can sometimes create quite a clog at the start and end of tournament prelim days.  Accordingly, you may consider some nearby alternatives.

After 4 p.m. on Friday, February 6, and on Saturday and Sunday, you can park in the “F” lot behind the Hardy House at 1809 and 1815 Chicago Avenue.
To reach this lot, from the front of the Hotel Orrington, drive one block north (the only way you can drive on Orrnington Avenue) to Clark Street.  Head east (take a right) on Clark Street and proceed one block to the intersection of Clark Street and Chicago Avenue.  Continue straight through the traffic light at that intersection and take an immediate left into the alley way just beyond the intersection.  This leads you directly to two adjacent “F” or faculty parking lots.  You will get ticketed in these lots if you do not move your vehicle by 8:30 a.m. on Monday; the no permit tickets are $40 each.  Also, avoid parking in the spots marked for the SAE fraternity offices on the north end of the parking lot, these are non university spots and violators will be towed.

Another option is a lot operated by the City of Evanston.  It is relatively cheap; $5 for twelve hours or more.  Consider this option if snow is forecast.  Unlike the aforementioned Northwestern lot, the City lot is covered, so you may save yourself some time on any morning when inclement weather looms.  To reach the City lot, from the front of the Hotel Orrington, drive one block north (the only way you can drive on Orrnington Avenue) to Clark Street.  Head east (take a right) on Clark Street and proceed one block to the intersection of Clark Street and Chicago Avenue.  Continue straight through the traffic light at that intersection.  This city lot is on your right just beyond the intersection.
