This morning, Richard "Skip" Stovall passed from fibrosis at age 70. Although he had lots of health challenges this year, he had been out of the hospital for Christmas before taking a turn yesterday.

Skip was a great friend and mentor - he coached the SMS program for several years (trading off with Don Stanton) from 1965 to 1983. After retiring from debate, he remained a powerful supporter of debate in the department - finally retiring in the mid 2000's.

Skip attended every MSU debate reunion, and showed up several times during workweek to meet the current debaters. His travel stories from days gone by were ... inspirational, in many ways.

If you knew Skip and want to attend his memorial, it will be at St. Mark's Episcopal (Kimberling City) this Saturday at 2pm.

From Eric Morris' facebook post:

Dear Eric,

I'm writing to Spicer Forum Alumni with a heavy heart today. This morning, former coach Skip Stovall passed from fibrosis. Skip coached debate at Missouri State from the mid 1960s to early 1980s, and remained in the Communication Department as a faculty member (and debate supporter) until the mid-2000's.

Skip had health challenges over the last few months, including a brief hospitalization before Christmas, but had improved. He was rushed back to the hospital yesterday, and was unable to recover.
