TEMPORARY POSITION IN COMMUNICATION - ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF FORENSICS
Truman State University

Full-time Temporary Faculty member to start August 2015 in Communication to provide classroom instruction in lower and upper division curriculum; to fulfill additional faculty duties including coaching intercollegiate forensics debate, modeling the teacher-scholar, academic advising, mentoring of students in research and other experiences; and to provide service to the university and community.  Requires MA in Communication, Public Communication or related area.

Applicants will be evaluated on:
•   academic qualifications,
•   teaching background or the potential for teaching (particularly in the areas of Public Communication and Communication Studies: Public Speaking, Advanced Public Speaking, Oral Advocacy and Debate, Argumentation, Oral Interpretation, Communication and Democracy at the introductory and advanced undergraduate level, as well as courses in high demand areas related to their specialty, such as Communication Theory, Mass Communication, Group Communication, Family Communication, and/or Health Communication),
•   forensics coaching background or the potential for assisting the Director of Forensics in coaching debate and forensics (primarily debate), including running practices and coaching students on campus and at tournaments on weekends, and the administrative responsibilities attached to such activities,
•   evidence of scholarly activity with emphasis on the use of candidates’ scholarship to inform their teaching,
•   previous experience mentoring undergraduate research students and/or  willingness to mentor undergraduate research,
•   evidence of, or demonstrated potential for, encouraging and mentoring students in transformative learning experiences such as undergraduate research, service-learning, and internships,
•   compatibility with the department’s needs,
•   complementing existing faculty strengths in terms of class coverage,
•   evidence of commitment to liberal arts education as a teacher-scholar, with undergraduate student development and accomplishment as the highest priority,
•   evidence of, or demonstrated potential for, developing critical thinking and problem solving skills in undergraduates,
•   interest and background in interdisciplinary and/or cross-disciplinary teaching, scholarship, and service, and
•   strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Compensation and Rank: Salary commensurate with experience and education; benefits package includes life, health, and disability insurance, retirement contributions, and partial reimbursement of moving expenses.  This appointment may be renewed annually upon mutual consent, dependent upon the results of the annual review, the needs of the University, and available funding. 

Program:  The Department of Communication at Truman has 13 full-time faculty members and approximately 300 students in the major program with approximately 60 minors in Communication and Political Communication. The Communication major allows students to choose from three emphases: Communication Studies, Journalism, and Public Communication.
