The Department of Communication Studies at UNLV has a January 15th deadline (with a rolling deadline after that, if all positions are not filled) for admission to our M.A. program and for debate and teaching assistantships.   Please consider graduate school and coaching at UNLV.  There are several key selling points associated with our program and school:

1) You would work with a great debate program.  Our squad emphasizes a variety of approaches to policy debate and our students have the right attitude, work ethic, and will to win.  Our students are all good people, appreciative, and wonderful to work with. The explicit goal of our squad is to become a national powerhouse and we are growing to accomplish that goal.  As a coach in our program, you have the ability to shape the future of our team.

2) You get paid to get a M.A. in our top-notch Communication Studies M.A. program.  We have a growing, accomplished, energetic, and engaged faculty who work closely and collaboratively with graduate students.  With several recent hires in both rhetorical studies and interpersonal communication (multiple hires in the past several years), and we are positioned to become one of the premier COM M.A. programs in the nation.  We also have an excellent track record in placing our M.A. graduates in the best COM Ph.D. programs in the nation (often with full funding/fellowships).  As a terminal MA program (there is not a COM Ph.D. program at UNLV), MA students receive all of the focus.

3) You'd get to go to school in Vegas, baby....

4) Your degree is essentially free AND you'd earn a $10,000 per year stipend. The money-making opportunities don't end there.  You would also have the opportunity to:

a) You can earn an extra (approximately) $3000 in the summer semester (after your first year) teaching a 5-week summer COM 101 class.
b) We will hire you to work at the Rebel Debate Institute, which is a mid-sized primarily local high school debate camp.
c) You can earn a $500 stipend by working as a part time assistant coach with the Las Vegas Debate League (our local version of an Urban Debate League)
d) We offer some graduate recruits the “Graduate Access Recruiting Award” which is a one-time financial award to encourage high-value recruits to join our program.
e) When traveling with us you get a generous meal stipend (whatever you don't spend you get to keep), and you can hire out for any rounds not needed to cover our commitment.

5) UNLV offers our Graduate Assistants deeply discounted health insurance.

6) You would have the opportunity to gain teaching experience as well as coaching experience.  Although, it also is possible to be a full-time assistant debate coach without teaching responsibilities…

7) We are a privately funded program, so there is no need to ever worry about University budget cuts or state financial troubles cutting our budget.

Cool  We debate at most of the major national tournaments, we fly most places, we (almost) always stay in the tournament hotel, and we generally eat well.

9) Our team has an unprecedented level of institutional support.  Everyone at UNLV, including the University President and Provost, the faculty in our College and Department, and travel and financial support staff around the University is deeply supportive of our program.

10) Great things are happening in the world of debate here in Las Vegas.  We have created a growing local debate league which has revitalized policy debate across the city.  Our recruiting has drastically expanded, and the University and City are taking notice of the UNLV debate team. There are already 2 high school debate tournaments with TOC bids, and the Golden Desert Tournament, held on the UNLV campus is a Quarters bid (in policy debate). On top of that the last 2016 Presidential Debate is taking place at UNLV, and the debate team is positioned to be deeply involved with the campus events surrounding that debate.
