4th ANNUAL BEAR-SHOCK DEBATE TOURNAMENT

September 25-27, 2010

Dear colleagues:

Wichita State University’s Debate Team invites you to attend the 2010 Bear Shock hosted by Wichita State University.  This marks the fourth year of the combined tournament hosted by both Wichita State and Missouri State.  We aim to continue the tradition of excellent competition and hospitality started by Eric Morris and Heather Walters at Missouri State.

TOURNAMENT INFORMATION

DIVISIONS:  There will be Open, Junior and Novice (with sufficient entries).  Time limits for the tournament are 9-3-6 with 10 min prep.  We will adhere to the CEDA guidelines for eligibility in each division.

TOPIC:  The 2010-2011 resolution will be used.

ENTRIES:  No limit on number of entries per school so long as an appropriate number of judges are provided.  Each school should arrange their own hired judging.  Failure to provide enough judges could preclude additional teams being entered.

FEES:  Each debate team will be charged $80.  Each uncovered debate team will be charged $150.  The fees are used to pay for tournament expenses, meals, and awards.  Judging fees go directly to those hired.  You will be asked to pay for any teams entered but dropped after 12 noon on Tuesday, September 21.  This includes any applicable judging fees.

DEBATES:  7 rounds of competition in each division, unless a division is too small.  There will be an appropriate number of elimination debates in each division.  Criteria for qualifying are (1) win-loss record, (2) total speaker points (3) adjusted speaker points.  Brackets will NOT be broken in the elimination rounds.

JUDGING:  Each school is expected to provide four rounds of judging for the first team, and three for the second team, and so on.  The tournament has no hired judging.  You are required to arrange your own hired judges.  ALL JUDGES MUST BE AVAILABLE TO JUDGE ONE ROUND AFTER HIS/HER TEAMS HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED.

AWARDS:  Awards will be presented to all teams qualifying for the elimination rounds in all divisions of debate.  Awards will be given to the top speakers in all divisions of debate.

REGISTRATION:  Debate registration begins at 6:00pm Friday, September 26, at the hotel.  Please register no later than 8:00pm.  The pairings for rounds 1 and 2 will be released between 9:00 – 10:00pm.

LODGING:  The Best Western Wichita North.  This is the same hotel we used two years ago.  The hotel is located at I-135 and 53rd North.  The address is 915 E. 53rd Street North.  Call the hotel directly at (316) 832-9387 to book your rooms.  When making your reservations, please let them know you are with “WSU Debate” to get the group rate.  The rate is $69.99/night plus tax.  The rate includes 4 hot breakfasts each day, free internet, and free parking.  Please use this hotel since elimination rounds will be held at the hotel on Monday.  Please make your reservation no later than August 25, 2010.  Additional rooms are available at the Wichita Inn North.  They can be reached at (316) 636-2022.
