Dear Colleagues:

We invite you to join us for the annual Motor City Classic invitational tournament at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. This year’s tournament will be held on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, October 30-November 1, 2010.

Since we are returning to the Halloween weekend, we will offer a Halloween costume contest. Top 3 winners will receive prizes at the awards ceremony on Monday. Costumes should be worn on Sunday, the 31st.

***FORMAT***
The tournament will employ the 2010-2011 CEDA/NDT National Debate Topic.

Our tournament is sanctioned for ADA, NDT and CEDA sweepstakes points and offers competition in three divisions: varsity, junior varsity, and novice. We will adhere to the latest ADA rules (which will be posted on our website when we receive the most updated copy. You can find them at http://www.wsuforensics.org/tournaments.htm under the “College Motor City Classic” section).

In Varsity and Junior Varsity, EIGHT preliminary rounds will be offered. Novice will feature 6 rounds .

Please refer to the ADA novice and junior varsity and varsity eligibility standards.

Following ADA rules, “no more than or less than half of the teams competing in the preliminary rounds of debate” will clear for elimination debates, offering opportunities for more teams to debate and qualify for the Wake Forest entry. Brackets will NOT be broken. Room and judge availability may affect the number of teams clearing.

Hybrid teams will be allowed to clear. Maverick entries are not accepted.

Wayne State will enter teams and contestants as long as those entries do not create a bye in a division. Wayne State contestants (even in hybrid situations) will not be eligible to clear.

Additionally, the tournament also agrees to comply with the underlying principles of CEDA’s Statement on Sexual Harassment and Discrimination and the Statement of Ethical Principles.

***TABULATION***
We use a limited judge preference system as entries permit. Pairing: Rounds 1 and 2 are random preset. If entries permit, Rounds 3 and 4 are lag-powered off of Rd. 1-2
results. Rounds 5 and 6 are lag-powered off of Rds 1-4, with Rd 7 and 8 individually powered.

Four rounds of judging are expected for each Varsity and Junior Varsity team entered. Three rounds are expected for each Novice. Novice outrounds may begin on Sunday evening. As a result, judges for teams with Novice entry can be used for these rounds even if they have fulfilled their prelim commitment.

We have a *VERY* limited number of judges for hire. If you need judges, please contact us immediately, as we cannot guarantee the availability of judges as we near the tournament weekend. Please, do not assume that we have judges available for you without first telling us that you need hired judging. Judges may be hired at $30 per round.

We strongly request that all qualified persons attending the tournament make themselves available for at least some judging, both in the preliminary and the elimination rounds.

All judges are obligated through the first elimination debate on Monday or one round past the point of their school's elimination from the tournament.

Judges are required to vote for one and only one team.

***HOUSING***
A block of rooms is being held at the luxurious Hyatt Regency Dearborn in the Fairlane Town Center, 600 Town Center Drive, Dearborn, MI 48126, phone 1-888-421-1442 for October 29-31, 2010. Reservations can be made by calling the number (ask for the Wayne State Debate block) listed above or use this direct link: https://resweb.passkey.com/go/waynestatedebate.

A flat free of $107.00 for 4 occupants and free internet is available if you make reservations by October 15th. If you have any problems with getting rooms, please contact me. The hotel is rather flexible and easy to work with as long as we deal with problems prior to the cutoff date.

Overnight parking at the hotel is free and accommodates large vans. Free internet is provided. In the room, purchase the internet as instructed, but the charged should be removed from your bill before you check out. If that is problem, let me know and I will have those charged removed.
