Title: Jessica Hockensmith
Post by: SherryHall on November 23, 2011, 09:51:10 PM
The College Debate community has suffered another inexplicable loss.  Jessica Hockensmith, a debater at MSU passed away yesterday.  Details are sketchy now.  All we know is that she passed away in her sleep and no cause of death has been determined yet.

My heart goes out to her family, the MSU debate family, and everyone else who knew her.

This is so shocking and terribly sad. Jessica was always so upbeat and vivacious. That's how I will remember her. I enjoyed judging her rounds & believed she had a bright future in the activity. My thoughts tonight are with the MSU squad and her family.  If there's anything that we outside East Lansing can do for those at MSU Debate, please let us know.

Let us all be that much more thankful tomorrow and everyday for those still with us.

I didn't know Jessica myself, but several of my close friends in debate did, and they never had anything but overwhelmingly positive things to say about her. As a part of a community that has seen far too much loss recently, and frequently has lost those who are young, I am genuinely sad.

Thanks for baking me that Obama birthday cake when I was doing campaign work. Thanks for being a proactive friend when I wouldn’t get off my couch. Thanks for making my senior year my best year at Eagle High school. What you lacked in height, you made up for in intensity. I still can’t believe you’re gone. It’s just not going to be Idaho anymore without you, Jessica Hockensmith. Debate has lost something that can't be replaced.

I would like to make a note to commemorate the life of our dear friend, debater, student, and colleague, Jessica Hockensmith.

Jessica was one of those people that you could feel the energy seeping from their pores.  When I first met Jessica, we were debate rivals.  I was debating for Boise High School and she for Eagle High School.  Jessica’s debate training came from two of the most intelligent debaters I have ever known, Cameron Thurber and Chris Zhang.  However, Jessica was a very unique debater.  Not only did she synthesize and master the techniques that Thurber and Zhang taught her, she paved a new path for Idaho debate into the modern era.

My respect for Thurber and Zhang will never be diminished; however Jessica was an extremely special and unique individual.  Jessica knew that the odds were against her; she was from Idaho debating in a male dominated activity while dealing with the hardships associated with debating in a backward and regressive community.  Luckily, she had energy and motivation for debate that is rarely seen in Idaho today.

Although Jessica did not reach her debate potential in Idaho, her drive to continue to invest in policy debate was never extinguished.  Jessica pursued her undergraduate degree at Michigan State University and in doing so was able to debate for one of the best college policy debate teams in this country.  At that point, Jessica was able to truly achieve the height of her abilities.

Jessica was fortunate enough to work with a truly outstanding program.  MSU believed in her to the degree that I believed in her.  The amount of success that Jessica achieved in her college career in debate gave people like me hope.  Jessica proved that well trained and motivated debaters from Idaho could still compete on a national college circuit.  Although Jessica was younger to me, I constantly looked to her as a source of inspiration for my debate endeavors in college.  I also know for a fact that the MSU team felt very fortunate to have a debater as motivated and positive as Jessica was.

The world has experienced such a massive loss on this sad day.  We have lost Jessica, one of the kindest people I have ever had the pleasure to know.

The loss to the debate community is especially poignant.  Idaho has lost our leader in the college circuit.  It pains me that I will not be able to go onto the CEDA forums and look for Jessica Hockensmith’s MSU records in the outrounds of tournaments.

Jessica, you have inspired me to a degree that you will never know.  I know that at one point you had looked up to me as a source for your inspiration in debate.  The reality is that debaters and people like you are the reason that this activity is great.  I am so very proud of you and what you have accomplished.  It saddens me so much to have to say goodbye to you.

Please rest in peace and know that have made such a positive impact on my life and so many others.

Much love and rest in peace,

Alex Abel

I am and have been speechless for the last 36 hours.

Good grief, JHock, there's so much I have to say to you and absolutely nowhere near enough space to say it. Where can I begin?

I had the pleasure of having you as a debate partner, a classmate, a friend...it really does just seem like a minute ago that we were trying to plan our Policy Evaluation presentation for November 29th and trying to figure out how to do regression analysis together. The last time I saw you, I remember that you were wearing your Hockensmurf sweater and I was joking with you about it. How could you be gone this soon? How is it possible that someone I saw two days ago no longer exists? I just don't get it. Maybe I never will.

You were a wonderful human being, and I never told you enough how much I really appreciated you. I remember going to Fenway Park with you and watching your eyes light up at finally making your childhood dream come true, I remember commiserating with you about how boring Scott's and Fujiwara's classes were, I remember losing our first break round because we forgot to ask whether they actually fiated the plan, I remember the dwarf house pictures Klante showed me, I remember how supportive you were when I was in the hospital during day 2 of the Georgia tournament, I remember how you took care of me on a night when I got too sick for my own good, I remember being happy about last year's NDT with you...all of these and a million more memories just keep flooding back to me, and I can't and don't want to stop them.

If I'm thankful for something on this Thanksgiving, it was the opportunity to know you like I did for these two years before you had to leave this Earth (I can't even believe I just had to type those last words, because the permanence of this still feels so alien to me). You were an amazing friend, a wonderful debater, a brilliant classmate, and words can never describe what I felt for you. Rest in peace.

With love,
Kabobya Ramsel

Today I am thankful for being able to (barely) afford to fly to see my family for the holidays, a luxury that I know many do not have. I am thankful that my grandmother is still alive despite a heart attack, a broken hip, and a broken shoulder this year because she has (barely) adequate healthcare. But mostly I am thankful for my debate friends who are basically family. Life is too short, we will all miss you Jessica Hockensmith. What a senseless, sad twist to Thanksgiving.

I can't look at a 12-pack of Diet coke or listen to Ke$ha without breaking down crying. The thing I'm most thankful for today is the fact that I had the chance to know you, debate with you, work with you, hang out with you, commiserate not breaking at GSU because we didn't ask the other team whether they actually fiated the plan with you, celebrate last year's NDT with you...there's so much more I could say, but the only thing that really can be said is...goodbye.

it feels strange to write on your facebook wall knowing you won't read this. you were such an inspiring person to be around. I always found it funny how you and I shared a mutual obsession with diet coke and marlboro smooths. I will never forget meeting you for the first time at 5 am on a summer night at me and katie's old apartment and the silliness the followed throughout the time we knew each other... all the nights at chandlers, kedzie house, how you would make any shitty situation better by getting us to laugh at it. I'm not going to forget your brilliant wit and caustic sense of humor and most importantly, how good you were to your friends. you were one of the most loyal people any of us could have known. see you on the other side babe.

We only debated once at the NDT and as competitive as you were I felt that you had a good spirit which is why after that round we stayed in contact. I was thoroughly impressed with your solid debate skills and after you cleared at the NDT as a freshman I knew you had a bright future at MSU. It really saddens me that it ended so soon but I find solace in knowing you are in a better place, now as a community it is our job to not only mourn this tremendous loss, but celebrate the time we had with you here in our community.

It’s not only hard to believe you’re gone but impossible. You were one of my best friends in the debate community and a great human being. I can’t believe we won’t smoke a cigarette on the stoop outside of McDonel or Holmes ever again. I can’t believe we’ll never again get to talk about how Derek Jeter is a pussy or why Baudrillard is right about everything. You weren’t perfect but that was what made you great. Nobody was better at working their way out of a bad situation. When others looked down at you (figuratively and literally) you did your absolute best to make them your friends and right your wrongs whether it worked or not. I know you sometimes doubted yourself but that never made you give up. You were a smarter, better, cooler person than I could ever be and I honestly, truly admired you. Not to mention you were one of the best debaters I’ve ever seen *public school pride*. I’m still in shock and I’m not really sure what happened to you but that’s irrelevant. All I know is that I love you, I miss you and I won’t ever forget you until the day I die.

Over the last few days I have thought a great deal about what I might say about Jessica.  I worked closely with her as a lab leader for three weeks and I have spent many hours in numbness thinking about her passing.  I feel that Jessica could be outspoken, but I felt from my time at the SDI this character trait obscured to most people her true love for debate and teaching.  Jessica could impart upon students something I can only dream of, which was her ability to teach work ethic.  This quality is one of the most difficult to instill and there is no doubt that Jessica could teach it.  Our lab had an incredible sense of community and again Jessica deserves much of the credit for it.

I have known many great coaches and debaters over the years, but this tragedy has been the hardest loss to me.  Jessica not only had the potential to transform young people's lives, but she was already doing it, I had the honor of watching her bring hope to kids who never dreamed about college or college debate.  I think about the thousands of lives she would have touched if her life ran its course longer and I can't begin to measure what the world lost.

In the face of this incalculable loss I have been expressionless for days.  I hope that there is a way for those of us who knew her well to continue on spreading her passion in honor of her.  I hope that those who did not know her well can try and learn something from her spirit.  Most of all, despite this unexpected end I know that Jessica got to share her passion and teach like she always wanted to, and for those of us who were her students and colleagues we are glad she never waited a moment to share her spirit with us.

Hockensmith was never a name you wanted to have opposite your pairings, and this was a blatant truth for the totality of my Junior year. I always admired your creativity, hard work ethic, and brilliant, vast intelligence on par if not succeeding many of the smartest people I know. I admired your knowledge of the activity of debate, and it would take years for my talent to become level with yours when you left. I know that you will never read this, but you were an inspiration, a true scholar, but most of all a friend, not only to me but the circuit and community you were a part of.

MSU student found dead in Lansing home last week

Social relations and policy and secondary education junior Jessica Hockensmith was found dead the morning of Nov. 23 in her Lansing home.

Hockensmith’s roommate found her in her room around 11 a.m. and called the Lansing Police Department after seeing Hockensmith laying on her bed and noticing her skin had turned a blueish color, Lansing police Lt. Noel Garcia said.

Garcia said officers arrived on the scene with paramedics and transported Hockensmith to a local hospital, but the responders believe she was dead before they reached her.

The Ingham County Medical Examiners Office performed an autopsy on Hockensmith, but the results are pending, administrative assistant Holly Marsh said.

There were no signs of trauma or struggle and foul play is not suspected, Garcia said.

Many members of the community have contacted our debate program seeking information regarding Jessica's funeral arrangements, how to contribute to her Memorial Fund, and additional events to be held in Jessica's honor.

Attached is a document that details the dates of events, the process for contributions, and the process for sending notes of condolence to the Hockensmith family.

Some items are tentative and I will work to keep CEDA Forums updated.

I know that the family has read the community's posts and extends both their appreciation and awe at the depth of concern that has been expressed.

On a personal note, I wanted to thank the community for all that they have done for the Hockensmith family and for our program. It is a difficult time -- but the MSU Debate family is indebted to the great many people that have shown us random acts of kindness in the wake of this tragedy.

Thank you all so very much.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the attached information.

Community remembers friend, debater as opinionated, full of life
http://www.statenews.com/index.php/article/2011/11/community_remembers_friend_debater_as_opinionated_full_of_life

On her first day of kindergarten, Jessica Hockensmith was not afraid to speak her mind.

Although many of her other classmates barely knew their last name, Hockensmith had no qualms getting up and reciting her last name letter-for-letter, said Pastor John Grimsted, a family friend.

“One student, whose last name was Jones, didn’t know how to spell his last name, and she said to him, ‘What’s wrong with you? You can’t spell Jones? I can spell Hockensmith,’” Grimsted said. “That’s the kind of personality she had.”

Hockensmith, a social relations and policy and secondary education junior, died the morning of Nov. 23 in her home at 216 S. Magnolia Ave., Lansing.

Hockensmith’s roommate, Kathryn Stoecker, found her in her room — her skin was discolored, and she wasn’t breathing.

Stoecker called 911 immediately, but Hockensmith was dead by the time paramedics arrived. An autopsy was conducted by the Ingham County Medical Examiner, but the results are pending. Foul play is not suspected, Lansing police Lt. Noel Garcia said.

Hockensmith’s parents could not be reached for comment Monday.

Grimsted said Hockensmith always was opinionated and strong-willed — traits that paid off in 2010 when she came to MSU to pursue her passion for debate.

Hockensmith participated in debate in high school and began looking into MSU’s debate team during her first visit to East Lansing in February 2010.

“I knew immediately that she kind of had a spark, she had energy,” MSU Head Debate Coach Will Repko said.

In her first year with the team, Hockensmith qualified for the National Debate Tournament, something few freshmen do, Repko said.

Repko said she had an amazing talent, which garnered immediate respect from members of the college debate community across the country.

One of her close friends, Maria Liu, an Okemos native and a senior on the University of Michigan debate team, came to know Hockensmith during the past year — chatting with her at competitions and visiting when she returned home.

Liu said Hockensmith would light up a room when she entered and she always had a way of making people smile.

“She had so much potential to be a great debater,” Liu said. “Everyone could tell she had a really great work ethic.”

Sharp and talkative in class, Hockensmith was a perfect fit in James Madison College, said Matt Zierler, an assistant professor of international relations who taught Hockensmith.

“She really wanted to put herself out there but also to engage in debates about important ideas,” he said.

From witty banter, to listening attentively, Hockensmith was a true friend said Stoecker, a social relations and policy junior.

The day before Hockensmith died, she drove to pick up Stoecker from class just so she wouldn’t have to walk to the bus stop, Stoecker said.

“She was wildly generous,” Stoecker said. “She’d do anything for anybody — she just wanted to make people happy.”

Although her outgoing attitude was intimidating at first, her roommate and comparative cultures and politics junior Andi Salinas grew to love her for it.

“She was like, ‘Hey, I’m Jessica. This is me — take it or leave it,’” Salinas said.

Loud and vocal about her opinions, Hockensmith’s laughter could be heard from the next room, Salinas said.

Salinas said Hockensmith joked about having glitter shoot from canons at her birthday party and used humor to cheer up her friends.

“She was absolutely more than any other person I’ve ever met — larger than life itself,” she said.

The MSU Debate Team set up the Jessica Hockensmith Fund to support her high school’s debate program and help offset the funeral costs.

Hockensmith’s funeral will be held in Idaho. Donations can be sent to the Jessica Hockensmith Fund at Eagle United Methodist Church, 651 North Eagle Road in Eagle, Idaho or deposited directly to Chase Bank account number 3006631682.

Today was a really hard day. I walked around campus today and saw you everywhere. Every single memory tied to every place - out on the stoop at Case, in front of McDonel where we stayed up all night talking outside during the SDI even though we had to judge debates at like 7 AM. I was grateful for the rain because I couldn't help but cry. Now as I write this, I'm sitting out on my porch, sipping on a diet coke, smoking a menthol cigarette and thinking about you while I watch the rain. I think it's fitting. I miss you a lot and even though I know you will never see this, I just needed to say it.

It can range in length from a sentence to a page. Any pictures you have of Jessica would also be appreciated. Please send your story, quote, or memory along with any pictures you might have to Brandy Johnson (brandy@micollegeaccess.org) or Katie Klante (katie.klante@gmail.com) by December 21st. Let us know if you would like a copy of the book and we can add it to the order.

Hey. So the Coast is around the corner, and it reminded me again of how much I miss you. I remember how sad we were that we spent our New Year's Eve cutting updates or how we had to debate Northwestern FS twice at this tournament last year. I know your plaque from Fullerton was still on your desk, last I was in your room (which, admittedly, was a while ago, but still). Anyways, I'll do my best to hop off a plane in LAX with a dream in my cardigan again. There will lots of Ke$ha. Promise. Anyways, I love you.

So I had a dream last night that you weren't really dead. We were suitemates, somehow, and I walked across the bathroom into your room, and there you were, getting ready for the day. You told me it was all a conspiracy and you had never really been dead, and I gave you maybe the biggest hug I've ever given anyone (that is actually a hugging occasion, btw). We went around to go tell all the people we knew that you weren't really dead, and I wanted to throw you a "welcome back to life" party. Then I woke up. And for a second, I maybe hoped that it wasn't just a dream and that you were still here. I miss you so much.

Friends of Jessica Hockensmith,
On Friday, December 23rd, at 3pm there will be a brief graveside service to bury her ashes at Dry Creek Cemetery. We will all meet up at Rembrandts afterward where we have the back room reserved though we will have the run of the whole place. Bring CD's and ipods as we will use their music system to play all of JHock's favorites. This is the chance to get together with all of her Idaho friends who were out of town or could not make it to the funeral.
