Debate Graduate Assistant Call (Autumn 2012)

Official Call
The Department of Communication at the California State University, Fresno, is seeking applicants for the Master of Arts program in Communication interested in graduate assistant debate coaching positions, to begin in the fall 2012 semester.  Graduate Teaching Associates who serve as assistant debate coaches will teach one class per semester and assist with the policy debate team through coaching, travel to tournaments, research, and other activities as determined by the Director of Debate, Dr. Kevin Kuswa.  Assistance with the public debate program may be part of the required duties as well.  California State University, Fresno, is a federally designated Hispanic-serving institution and is an EEO/Affirmative Action employer.

Admission to graduate study at the California State University, Fresno, occurs at two levels.  First, you must be admitted to the Division of Graduate Studies at the University; second you must be admitted to the Departmental Program.  It is important you complete both sets of admission procedures.  Applications are reviewed when all required materials are complete.  The deadline for applications is March 1, 2012.

The application process is detailed on the Division of Graduate Studies website at http://www.csufresno.edu/gradstudies/admission/applying.shtml

University (Division of Graduate Studies) Admission – Required Elements

• Online application to the Division of Graduate Studies for California State University, Fresno, at www.csumentor.edu.  Be sure to indicate in your online application that you are interested in the Department of Communication’s M.A. program.
• Official GRE scores.  To expedite application processing, request an unofficial score report when you take the test and send that, followed later by the official scores.
• One official transcript, in a sealed envelope, from each college or university you previously attended and/or are currently attending.
• International Students must also submit their TOEFL scores.
• $55.00 application fee

Transcripts and test scores should be forwarded to:

Office of University Admissions - Graduate/Post-baccalaureate
5150 North Maple, M/S JA 57
Fresno, CA 93740-8026

Department (Program) Admission – Required Elements

• A statement of purpose (outlining your reasons for pursuing graduate study in Communication), if you did not submit one with the online University application at www.csumentor.edu
• Three letters of recommendation from individuals who can attest to your preparation for graduate study (these letters may be included in the application sent by you, or may be mailed separately).  Letters from professors familiar with your work are preferred; at least one letter must be from a debate coach who has supervised your work to be considered for a graduate assistant debate coach position.
• A sample of your writing (upper division academic paper, project proposal, etc.), preferably a research paper that demonstrates your preparation for graduate-level writing in the form of an extended argument supported by substantial references
• An application for a teaching assistantship, if you wish to be considered for one.  Be sure to include the TA application form (found at http://www.csufresno.edu/aps/documents/unit11/TA_app_form.pdf, list “Teaching Associate – Assistant Debate Coach” under “Position Sought”), the completed SC-1 form attached to this call, and a curriculum vitae (minimum contents are listed on the back of the SC-1 form).  The cv should include details regarding your policy debate experience as a competitor as well as any coaching you have done.

Department (Program) application materials should be sent directly to:

Graduate Coordinator
Department of Communication
California State University, Fresno
5201 N. Maple Avenue, M/S SA46
Fresno, CA  93740-8027

Please direct any questions regarding the graduate assistant debate coaching positions to Dr. Kevin Kuswa at <kkuswa@csufresno.edu>

General questions about the Communication M.A. graduate program or application procedures should be directed to the department’s Graduate Coordinator, Dr. Marnel Niles, at <mnniles@csufresno.edu>

Additional (Informal) Information from the Director

The team is young and growing and is at a place where a committed Graduate Assistant would make a big difference in shaping the team’s development.  Fresno State students are thirsty for additional educational opportunities and the potential to do some meaningful work is virtually unlimited.  In addition, the Department of Communication is nothing short of wonderful and is completely committed to excellent teaching.  Master’s students are well-positioned for careers in the field or to continue on to earn a PhD.  Because the Department does not have a PhD program, the Graduate Assistants are not lost in the shuffle—in fact, the opposite is true because the GAs are an integral part of the efforts of the Department as a whole.  There are a lot of opportunities for working with high school programs in the area as well and the public debate aspect of the program is quite active.  If you could use additional information about graduate school fees (tuition), the link is here: http://www.csufresno.edu/catoffice/current/fees.html.  In addition, the Division of Graduate Studies at Fresno State offers several scholarships and fellowships.  Some are available to entering students, others are only available once students are enrolled.  The list is at http://www.csufresno.edu/gradstudies/financial/dgsawards.shtml.  The Central Valley is a super place to live and I would be more than willing to answer any other questions you might have.  Come be a part of a vibrant and growing program!

Sincerely,

Kevin Kuswa, PhD

hi all,

just a quick bump on this thread and a couple of other thoughts:

1. Graduate Student Focus.

From getting to know the faculty here, the opportunity to get an MA and work with these folks is really amazing.  The Fresno State MA in Communication is the ticket to either a solid job in the field or admission to a top PhD program.  Graduate Students enjoy extended time developing their theses and improving their teaching with the faculty.  The projects coming out of the Dept. are really innovative and well-developed--great article platforms or even the seeds of a dissertation.

2. A student population where debate matters

Students here are hungry to improve their advocacy and speaking skills--the learning atmosphere is contagious.  A number of students are the first members of their families to atttend a 4-year institution and many are working their way through school.  The diversity is kaleidoscopic to say the least and all of this creates a wonderful space for debate pedagogy.

If you love debate and communication and want to make a difference in those areas, one of the debate Graduate Assistant positions at CSU Fresno is for you.  Questions?  Email me.

a little update on this opportunity--the deadline for applying to grad school and the debate positions at Fresno State has been extended to April 1st.  Contact me with questions.  From working with some of the M.A. students here, I can say without a doubt that this is one of the best places to really get some good teaching experience, write a high quality thesis, and prepare to go straight into the workforce or into a PhD program.

Bump on this information--it's all the same for 2013 applications (except you add a year).

Lots of exciting opportunities for an M.A. in Communication Studies and coaching experience.

If you have any questions, please email me at kkuswa at csufresno dot edu.  I will also be at CSUN this weekend, the NCA in Orlando, and the USC-Fullerton swing if you want to talk about the position.

Thanks,

Kevin

nudge....

Grad school application coming up (March 1st).  Even if you do not have a lot of debate experience, this opportunity is still available for those students interested in a Masters in Communication and coaching an enthusiastic team.

Our current Graduate Assistant coaches are both graduating this year.  They are working on really strong theses, applying to the top PhD programs in the country, and loving their interactions with debate.  They have earned valuable teaching experience in the field and are extremely well-positioned for the next stage of academia.  That could be you as well--come join us.  Questions welcome and I can also put you in contact with our current graduate student-coaches if you have questions for them.
