UGA Tournament - January 14-16, 2012
« on: December 09, 2011, 01:27:00 PM »
Dear Colleagues:

The Georgia Debate Union is pleased to announce that it will be hosting the University of Georgia Debates in Athens, Georgia from January 14-16, 2012. Registration will be held in the Holiday Inn lobby on Friday, January 14. This will be the second year that the University of Georgia has hosted and hopes that you will join us for the long Martin Luther King Jr. weekend.

The tournament will employ the 2011-2012 CEDA/NDT National Debate Topic. Standard 9/3/6 time format. Speaker points will use the 30 point scale with tenths. Speaker point ties are allowed, but discouraged. Each debate must have one and only one winner.

Eight preliminary rounds in the open division, clearing to an Octa-final (assuming entries are consistent with last year’s tournament). Elimination round are flip for sides (assuming teams have not previously met). Brackets will not be broken. JV and Novice divisions will also be held but may be collapsed if necessary.

Each team in competition must provide a qualified judge to cover 4 rounds of debate. As a general norm, we expect that all qualified people attending the tournament make themselves available for some judging. All judges are obligated through the Octa-finals on Monday and are committed to judge one round past the point of their school’s elimination from the tournament. While it is possible that we may have some judging for hire, historically judging has been very tight at this tournament and we ask that you plan to cover your entire commitment. If hired judges are available, the fee for judging will be $30 a round.

Please use Debate Results to enter teams and judges. We would encourage you to enter food preferences for participants.  We plan on closing registration on January 11 to establish a number of guests for planning purposes.

The fee structure is based on the number of participants. We will assess a fee of $40 per person. We are willing to work with new programs to ensure that interested students will be able to compete.

Will Mosley-Jensen will be Tab Room Director.

We will provide breakfast each morning Saturday and Sunday (including fruit, protein, etc.; not just donuts), lunch on Saturday and Sunday and a dinner Sunday night. There will be coffee, drinks and snacks available throughout the day each day. On elim day there will be limited breakfast, snacks, coffee, drinks, as well as pizza for competitors and judges. We can help arrange elim participants food if they do not have extra people or transportation to take care of it. We will have vegetarian and vegan options available for all meals so please be sure to indicate this on debateresults. Please contact us directly if you have any other dietary restrictions we can help with.

Hotel Information:

We have secured a block of rooms at the Holiday Inn at $89 per room + taxes (14%).  The hotel is located in downtown Athens and is a short walk from the buildings we will use for the debates.  The phone number at the Holiday Inn is 706-549-4433. The group code is UCD/University of Georgia.

There are several other hotel options (in order of proximity from campus):
Best Western-Colonial Inn, 170 N. Milledge Ave. 706-546-7311
Comfort Inn, 3980 Atlanta Hwy. 1-800-228-5150 or 706-227-9700

Foundry Inn, 295 E. Dougherty Street 706-425-9700

Air Travel:

While there is an airport in Athens, we recommend using the Atlanta airport.

Athens is 66 miles east of Atlanta. From the South and West take Highway 316 from Interstate 85 North from Atlanta. Highway 316 will become Epps Bridge Road at Athens Loop Route 10. Continue going straight on what is now Epps Bridge Road which will become Atlanta Highway/Broad Street as you come off the Epps Bridge ramp.
