Tournament Update
« on: February 01, 2012, 02:46:31 PM »
Hey Folks,
Here’s some info for the tournament at UF this weekend.

Gator Debate Tournament and the DSR-TKA Championship at the University of Florida

Registration: As we indicated in the initial schedule, registration is from 1:30-4:00pm, Friday the 3rd in Rolfs Hall, room 413. Rolfs Hall is about a four block walk from the St. Augustine’s Catholic Church Parking Lot (see parking below) straight into campus on Buckman Drive—Rolfs is on the left right before the curve.

DSR-TKA Membership:  For schools that are already charter members of DSR-TKA and who want to be considered for the DSR-TKA Debate Awards (National Champion Varsity & Novice Teams, National Champion Varsity & Novice Speaker Awards, and Debate Sweeps) will need to pay their $50 annual dues which will also cover the membership for students to be initiated while at the tournament.  See for more information about DSR-TKA.

Driving Directions: If you are staying at the Paramount Plaza Hotel, directions to the campus are quite simple. Leave the hotel and turn left onto Southwest 13th Street. Follow SW 13th Street to University Avenue and turn left. Matherly Hall, where debate competition is on Friday, will be on your left (about 2 buildings down) on University Avenue. There is no adjacent parking so you may want to turn right onto one of the side streets off of University Avenue and drop-off your students to then cross the street to the building.

Parking: Parking at UF is almost impossible until after 5pm on Friday, however Saturday and Sunday you can park anywhere on campus except 24 hour tow away zones and reserved spots. For Friday parking for the Policy Debate Teams, your best parking option off campus is at the St. Augustine Catholic Church’s Parking Lot – if you are coming from the Paramount Plaza Hotel you will turn right from University Ave on to 17th Street. If you are coming from I-75 and are coming East on Newberry Road which turns into University Avenue, you’ll want to turn left on 17th Street from University Ave. Go one block and make a left and you will see the St. Augustine’s Parking Lot on your right. They have a daily rate of $9 (or approx. $2/hr). You might want to park there at least initially and then move to a campus spot after the first round.  There are also some meters on NW 14th Street across University Ave. from Matherly Hall.
When parking on campus Saturday and Sunday, you will want to park in the large lot (Chemistry Lot) at the corner of Buckman Drive (Buckman is actually 17th St going into campus) and University Ave (on campus across from the Swamp Restaurant) then walk down Buckman drive  to Turlington Hall.

Competition Locations:  On Friday, all debate competition will take place in Matherly Hall—come to the 1st floor. On Saturday and Sunday, debate competition and the tab room will move to Turlington Hall (directly adjacent to Rolfs Hall on the East side)—come to the 2nd floor.

Food during Tournament: We will be providing dinner Friday, Breakfast and Lunch Saturday, and Breakfast Sunday. There is also a dessert reception on Saturday at 5:15pm (see below).

UF SMOKING POLICY: The University of Florida is a NO SMOKING campus as of July 2010.

Dessert Reception & DSR-TKA Student Initiation:  This event is for all competitors and will take place on Saturday at 5:15pm in CLB C130 (one block from Turlington).
