Boston Debate League hiring After-School Program Associate

The Boston Debate League seeks a dynamic and ambitious individual to serve as an After-School Program Associate to support a cohort of Boston Public Schools competing in the Boston Debate League.  This is an entry-level position and is a fantastic opportunity for an alumna/alumnus of an Urban Debate League who is passionate about transforming schools through the incredible activity of debate.


The After-School Program Associate will be responsible for and engaged in the following:

•   Working with an After-School Program Manager to provide critical support to BPS debate coaches in building and maintaining large, robust debate teams in a conference of middle schools in Boston Public Schools.  This includes site visits, facilitation of debate practices when necessary, email and phone support, and coach development seminars.
•   Aiding teacher-coaches in the creation of curriculum and recruitment materials.
•   Collaborating with colleagues to develop innovative new approaches to engage more BPS students in debate.
•   Organizing logistical support for BDL debate tournaments and sharing the responsibility of Tournament Director with other program staff.
•   Providing necessary support for select championship and regional tournaments.
•   Working with a small groups of students during the summer debate institute as necessary.

Qualifications for an ideal candidate:

•   Experience as a debater in an urban school environment or working with urban debaters.
•   Detail-oriented with a high degree of organizational and time management skills.
•   An outgoing and positive personality with strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative working style.
•   A strong work ethic and a willingness to commit to a task(s) and follow-through.
•   High degree of initiative, discretion and maturity.
•   An enthusiasm for a fast-paced work environment within a growing non-profit organization and a willingness to contribute as needed to the growth of an organization.
•   A sense of humor.
•   Bachelor’s degree required.
