Lecturer and Director of Debate

Georgia State University

The Department of Communication at Georgia State University in Atlanta invites applicants for a Lecturer who will serve as Director of Debate to begin August 2015. Ph.D., M.F.A., or other terminal degree required. Candidates will ideally have a background in argumentation and debate pedagogy, an administrative track record that documents an ability to organize tournaments and involvement in forensics events, mentor students to competitive success, and evidences a commitment to diversity and the work of urban debate initiatives. We are open to a range of academic specializations, and the connected teaching assignment could relate to courses in speech communication, rhetoric and argumentation, research methods (social scientific or humanistic), mass communication, media studies, or journalism. Candidates will mainly teach courses in the Department of Communication’s undergraduate speech or journalism sequences.

Lecturers are eligible for annual renewal that may lead to promotion to rank of Senior Lecturer, and then, given a promotable track record, to rank of Principle Senior Lecturer. The position does not require an ongoing research program, but is centered on teaching and a departmental service assignment, which in this case would center on organizing the University’s debate activities.

Applications should include a letter of application and CV, transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and evidence of teaching effectiveness. An offer of employment will be conditional upon background verification. Review of applications to begin January 15, 2015. Georgia State University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer. Women, minorities, and candidates from other traditionally under-represented groups are especially encouraged to apply. Address applications to Dr. M. Lane Bruner, Search Chair, Department of Communication, Georgia State University, Twenty Five Park Place NE, Suite 800, Atlanta, GA 30302-5060.

For more information, contact Dr. M. Lane Bruner at mbruner@gsu.edu or Dr. David Cheshier, Chair, Department of Communication, at dcheshier@gsu.edu.
