Joe Patten asked me to post this.  Tournament will be open on Tabroom by Wednesday.

JERSEY SHORE INVITATIONAL AT MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY (January 30-Feb 1)

We are pleased to announce the invitation to participate in the 5th Annual Jersey Shore Invitational at Monmouth University to be held from Jan 30-Feb 1, 2015.   This year's policy debate tournament will feature six preliminary rounds of competition including two on Friday, four on Saturday, and break rounds on Sunday. We will be debating the following. Resolved: The United States should legalize all or nearly all of one or more of the following in the United States: marihuana, online gambling, physician-assisted suicide, prostitution, the sale of human organs.

We want the tournament to be a great experience for everyone and hope that the tournament Hotel near the beach will be an inviting backdrop for debaters to build friendships across campuses.  The registration fee is $40.00 per person (debater ($80 per team, 40 per coach, or judge).  The tournament will snacks on Friday night, and will  provide breakfast and lunch on Saturday, and  breakfast on Sunday.

The tournament offers competition in three divisions of policy debate: open, junior varsity and novice divisions. We will be using a 30-point scale with a tenth of a point increments (e.g. 27.1, 27.2 etc) on individual speaking scores.

Our tournament is CEDA sanctioned and will comply with CEDA’s Statement on Sexual Harassment and Discrimination and the Statement of Ethical Principles.  Christy Dunn of Boston College and Neil Berch of West Virginia University will run the tab room.  Time limits for speeches are 9-3-6 with ten minutes of preparation time.  Rounds one and two will be pre-determined and rounds three through six will be power matched.  Each school is responsible for securing three rounds of judging for every team registered at the tournament.  A limited number of judges can be hired for $30 per round.

Hotel Accommodations: We reserved large rooms at $95.00 at the Berkeley Hotel in Asbury Park.  Please note this is a different Hotel than the one used over the last couple of years.  The Berkeley is located at 1401 Ocean Ace, Asbury Park, NJ.  The phone number is 732 776-6700.  The Hotel is over 100 years old and was once owned by country music star Johnny Cash.  It was recently renovated.  Please try to make Hotel arrangements early in order to guarantee the tournament rate. The hotel is across the street from the beach and many rooms have ocean views.  The Hotel is a five to ten minute drive to the tournament and is in walking distance to a lot of restaurants.    .

If you have any questions, please contact me at (732) 263-5742 (office) (732) 930-4300 (cell)
or by e-mail at jpatten@monmouth.edu.  Please let me know if there’s anything at all we can do for you or your students to help make this a wonderful tournament and weekend.

 In friendship,

    Joe Patten, Monmouth University
