Berkeley Preparatory School is seeking qualified applicants for the position of history teacher and policy debate coach and teacher. Berkeley Preparatory School, an outstanding independent coeducational day school in Tampa, Florida, places an emphasis on academic excellence with a spirit of social responsibility. Students of all ages exchange ideas and explore ethics as they define their attitudes and values. Berkeley educates the whole child by nurturing students’ intellectual, emotional, spiritual and physical development so that they may attain their highest potential. Berkeley has built a national reputation for academic rigor at the country’s most prestigious universities. The school’s active Episcopal affiliation focuses on inclusivity, support, respect, and the shared values reflected in Berkeley’s vision statement, Berkeley puts people in the world who make a positive difference. The Berkeley administration sees policy debate as an essential reflection of the school's core mission. The school's commitment to excellence in debate is unstinting.

Berkeley has a growing and very dedicated young debate team. The team travels an extensive national schedule and competes exclusively in policy debate. Because Berkeley is a preK to 12 school there is a great opportunity to start training debaters in middle division and watch them flourish through the four years of upper division.

I (Mike Speer) expect to remain involved with the team organizing travel, overseeing the budget, looking after administrivia, and participating in practices, meetings, and travel so that our new coach has maximum opportunity to work with students.

At Berkeley the debate coach is a teaching position with four classes. We are looking for person with experience teaching history and coaching debate. At the moment, Berkeley does not have a debate class but there is administrative support to create one in the future. We do offer two sections of a course called “Reasoning, Research, and Rhetoric” which has its roots in my earlier efforts under a prior administration to create a “stealth” debate class. A coaching candidate might enjoy the opportunity to teach this class. The start date for the successful candidate will be August 2015.

Interested candidates should submit a letter of interest, a resume, and contact information for two debate-related references to:
