Berkeley Preparatory School, in Tampa Florida, is searching for an Assistant Debate Coach for academic year 2015-16.

Berkeley Preparatory School’s academic and extracurricular programs reflect the engagement, rigor, passion, respect, kindness, optimism, positive energy, and desire for excellence that are hallmarks of the school. Our students excel regionally and nationally in academics, the arts and athletics. The Berkeley Debate Team enjoys outstanding support from the school’s administration, faculty, and parents.

Qualifications:
•   Experience in policy debate competition
•   Experience in research and evidence production for policy debate
•   Previous coaching/mentoring experience

Assistant coach responsibilities include:
•   Guide student growth in argument construction, research, delivery, and strategic thinking.
•   Coach and judge at 10-12 national and/or regional tournaments during the academic year
•   Complete a research assignment for each tournament Berkeley attends
•   Direct, review, and edit student research
•   Listen to and provide feedback to students by listening to video recordings of debates, practice speeches, and rebuttal reworks
•   Engage students in discussions (online and in-person) about arguments and strategy
•   Collaborate with the Director of Debate on decision-making and planning as needed
•   Non-local candidates must be able to regularly to advise students online or by email or telephone.
•   Support appropriate student behavior as outlined in the Berkeley Student Handbook
•   Minor administrative tasks

Candidates who live in the Tampa area are preferred, but highly qualified candidates residing elsewhere will be considered. On some occasions the assistant coach may be required to travel through Tampa en route to and/or from tournaments in order to chaperone student travel.

In addition to experience and a strong educational background, successful candidates should demonstrate an enthusiasm for working with children, an engaging coaching style, an ability to interact well with parents and colleagues, and a willingness to create and promote an inclusive learning environment.
