The Korea Debate Society (KDS), located in Daegu, South Korea, is seeking a debate coach to begin work from mid-July, 2017. This appointment will run through February of 2018, and is a good opportunity for anybody between undergrad and graduate/law school, or simply wanting to experience a different culture while guiding students in their personal development as debaters. KDS offers a light class schedule with small classes of intelligent and motivated students.
Classes are held two to four days a week, giving you substantial time to prepare lessons, conduct your own affairs, and experience Korean culture (the Korean Thanksgiving and New Year holidays are also a great chance for travel around East and Southeast Asia, for which Korea is a particularly convenient base). Our students compete in the Asian Parliamentary debate format and attend two to three tournaments per year, in addition to hosting a small camp and tournament in August.
Successful applicants will have the following minimum qualifications:
• Have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university;
• Experience competing in college and/or high school debate;
• Ability to pass a criminal background check;
• The ability to obtain, or already in possession of, a valid passport.
Additionally, preference will be given to those applicants who have prior speech and debate coaching experience at the middle and/or high school level.
Compensation includes a competitive salary, health insurance, pension, housing, and airfare.
To apply, please email mikefitz031(at)gmail(dot)com with a résumé and short cover letter describing your experience in debate and motivation for applying to be KDS’s next debate coach (no more than two or three paragraphs is necessary, though you are welcome to write more if you wish). Any questions about the position or life in Korea can be sent to the same address.
