2020 JMU NDT Information -- Hotels, flights, etc.
« on: November 16, 2019, 10:41:07 AM »
Announcements for the 2020 NDT at James Madison.
Hotel is now accepting reservations.  Dates: March 27-30, 2020.
Flight Information:
Being two hours from DC, there are plenty of flight options:
Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport is just 20 minutes from the Hotel ( and has direct flights from Washington, DC and Chicago. Teams flying into SHD can utilize a JMU shuttle to transport you to and from the Hotel Madison. If you will be utilizing the shuttle please email Hayley Jenkins at
Other airport options include:
· Charlottesville International Airport (CHO) is approximately 1 hour from JMU.
· Washington Dulles (IAD) or Reagan International (DAC) are both 2-2.5 hours away from JMU
· Richmond International Airport (RIC) is approximately the same distance as the DC airports, but there is not the DC traffic. There are often deals from RIC that are comparable to DC.
If sufficient interest exists JMU can arrange for JMU transportation to do pick-ups and drops offs for a fee.
Hotel Information:
All of the debates will be in the Hotel Madison ( or an adjacent building. We have secured a hotel block with a rate of $96 per night (the state per diem rate). There is a charge for the 3rd and 4th guests in each room, but the original quoted rate was $114 per night so there is a significant discount in exchange for this charge.
To book using your direct link, go to
To book online using the hotel’s website, go to Click Reserve Now to select your dates of stay and click the words SELECT AN OPTION.  Select Group Code, enter the code NDT2020, then click Reserve Now again. You will be taken to a screen where you can select your room type and enter payment details. Please note that this code is for online use only.
The guests in your party can also call 540-564-0200 and say they are making reservations for the National Debate Tournament and the dates they will be staying at the hotel. Guests may find it helpful to specify
If you are part of a team that will need 10 or more rooms please contact Brooke Driver at the hotel directly at  She will be able to create your reservations and ensure your rooms are assigned close together.
Other Notes:
· We are currently working with University Advancement to identify alumni who wish to donate in support of the National Debate Tournament. We hope that this will bring down the cost per team
· Additionally, we are working with sponsors from across the region including Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance, Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport, area graduate schools, Merck and other local businesses. We are also working to secure discounts to area restaurants for visiting teams.
· Parking and internet are currently being negotiated through the university. My guess is that both will be covered by existing university resources and will not need to be paid for by tournament participants.
· Currently the budget assumes almost the entire tournament will take place in the Hotel Madison, but there are anywhere from 10-25 rooms in the adjacent building that we may be able to use for debates. The cost should adjust down significantly as we work to acquire more of these rooms.
· Liv Stephens ( in our Strategic Planning Office will be serving as our ADA contact. She will be onsite for the entire tournament to help with logistics.
