NCA Deadline TODAY! 3/23
« on: March 13, 2011, 05:50:20 AM »
From NCA:

Due to recent events in Japan, the deadline for convention submissions has been extended one week. The deadline for submissions is 11:59 p.m. U.S. Pacific time on Wednesday, March 23, 2011. We recognize that communications channels in Japan have been severely compromised, if not devastated, and hope this extension will allow our Japanese colleagues and members currently residing in Japan to still be part of the convention experience. Any member residing in Japan is encouraged to contact the Convention Team for assistance if needed.

Anyone interested in submitting to the NCA 97th Annual Convention must complete their submission via NCA Submission Central before the deadline. NCA Submission Central accounts were automatically generated for individuals who held an NCA membership on November 5, 2010 in the submission website. Please use your NCA username and password to log in there. However, you do not need to be an NCA member to submit. If you were not an NCA member on November 5, 2010, just create a new account on the NCA Submission Central website.

If you have ideas for panels or participants, you may email them to me and I will facilitate discussion.  Please help brainstorm.  The call is posted below.  Some suggestions:

The Cross Examination Debate Association invites submission of individual papers, paper sessions, panel discussions pan or extended abstracts for the 2011 National Communication Association Convention to be held in New Orleans, Louisiana from November 17-20, 2011.  CEDA encourages scholarship which promotes and develops understanding of argumentation and debate in contexts including but not limited to academic debate, political debate, legal argumentation, and debate in the public sphere. Proposals for presentation and discussion of issues important to competitive debate practice as well as argumentation theory, philosophy of argument, advocacy, decision making, argument across cultures and argument in applied contexts are welcomed, as are interdisciplinary linkages within and beyond the Field(s) of Communication. Submissions which address the Convention theme, “Voice,” are strongly encouraged.   A convention theme committee will review papers, panels and programs relevant to this theme for acceptance beyond the initial CEDA slot allotment, increasing opportunities for thematically linked work.  Non-traditional panel proposals are encouraged, including debates and other creative programs.  All paper submissions will be blind.  The paper with the best reviews will be nominated for the top CEDA paper award.

Submissions must be made electronically through the (new) NCA Submission Central system, accessed through the National Communication Association’s convention website http://www.natcom.org/convention. The period for submission is January 10 through March 16, 2011 at 11:59pm Pacific Time.

The CEDA Unit Planner is David L.  Steinberg, University of Miami, 305-284-5553, dave@miami.edu. Contact NCA or Professor Steinberg with your questions.  The NCA Convention Resource Library, linked through the convention web site at www.natcom.org/covnention, also provides useful resources for submitters.

Dave,

Do you have a preliminary list yet of proposals?  If we had an idea it might help spur ideas and/or get people on the ball if we are at risk of having too FEW panels/papers, etc.

Thanks for the work!

I am working on a panel about the immigration topic (a retrospective), if anyone is interested. The general idea is to get perspectives about the way that the topic played out from coaches.

Thanks,
Sarah

Paul is right, Today (11:59 Pacific Time) is the deadline.  You may submit a paper, a paper panel, or a panel discussion.  Papers and paper panels may be edited and revised post-submission, so consider submitting work even if its still in progress.  Panels require a good idea and a group of willing discussants.  This may also be formatted as a town hall debate.  Remember that the conference theme is "Voice"

For details on HOW TO SUBMIT, go to

http://www.natcom.org/uploadedFiles/Content/Convention/How%20to%20Submit%20Reference%20Slides.pdf

If you are willing to participate in some capacity (Chair, Respondent, Discussant), email me dave@miami.edu.

We have some very good submissions, but not very many!
