An Unofficial Statement
« on: April 27, 2010, 07:24:30 PM »
The Michigan Debate Team appreciates all of your help and support at this time.

Aaron Kall has been named the director of debate for the University of Michigan. The dean and the head of the department in which the team is located are very supportive of the debate team and the summer camp. The camp will proceed as scheduled this summer with Aaron Kall as the acting director. As I write this, Aaron is traveling to Ann Arbor. We hope to have more news and an official statement soon.

Again, thank you for your patience and understanding.

I have known Aaron for a long time and I know that Michigan is very fortunate to have someone so capable to step in at such a sad and difficult moment. Aaron is without question someone of the highest caliber as a debate coach, administrator, and most importantly, as a person. Much respect for the UM administrators for recognizing his outstanding talents as the best person to lead UM debate.

My heart goes out to all of the Michigan debate family tonight. As a debater, judge, and coach, I have appreciated watching how dedicated and hardworking the Michigan debaters and coaches are to this activity. I was lucky enough to teach a lab at the summer institute with Aaron, along with several other members of the Michigan community, and know how much they care about keeping the legacy of Michigan debate alive and how hard they work every day to keep improving the program. I am confident that Aaron, Whit, Jason, and the debaters and alumni will come together to make this year’s camp as incredible as always and continue improving an already fantastic squad filled with talented debaters and wonderful people.

U of M has had a very long and outstanding tradition in debate competition and outreach to the debate community in the state of Michigan. My thoughts and support go out to Aaron, Whit and the U of M debate squad during these trying times. The Wolverine debate team is one of the premier programs in the region and nation and should be recognized for its numerous achievements and promotion of debate; it has truly had an important and positive impact on the debate community. I am very happy that the U of M administration has selected Aaron to lead the program.

I'm relieved to hear that the proud tradition of Michigan debate will be left in Aaron's capable hands. I know that Whit and everyone else who has worked so hard over the years to build and support the program will step up to the plate and continue their efforts on behalf of the University of Michigan and all the deserving students there who get so much from the activity of debate. My thanks go out to the University of Michigan for recognizing the powerful benefits debate brings their students, and for choosing such a strong and respected advocate for debate to oversee the program during this difficult time.

Like many of you, I was stunned with the news yesterday.

This morning, I was relieved to hear that the University of Michigan had acted quickly to name Aaron Kall the Director of Debate. I've known Aaron for many years, and while we seem to split on elim panels, he is extremely hard working and a fabulous coach. I am always happy to see him in the back of the room as a judge (although the feeling may not always be mutual....we have K teams too...), and I am completely confident in his ability to handle the additional responsibilities with the administrative side of the program. Not all programs would be so blessed as to have a well respected assistant with years of training able to step into action on day 1.

The Michigan program is an extremely important part of the community. In addition to having a top 20 team more often than not, their summer institute is one of the largest and most well respected in the nation. Literally thousands of the nation's best debaters can point to the UM program as one of the more important experiences in their development as a debater. While the college debate community has benefitted from at least hundreds of those debaters, I'm sure many of those who decided to move onto other activities in college ended up at Michigan after having a great experience with the university.

Michigan is coming off another impressive season, and has several of the best young debaters in the activity. I am confident they will be able to continue the tradition under Aaron's leadership. I specifically would like to express my appreciation to the dean and department head for supporting the program in such a decisive way.

I am so relieved to hear this news. I was worried sick for the U of M team yesterday, and am so happy to hear that the university refused a reactionary decision and instead left the team in the exceptionally capable hands of Aaron. Best of luck, and please let me know if there is anything I can do, despite my previous employment at MSU, my love of debate at all institutions in michigan is overwhelming  :)
All my positive energy goes out to the UofM debate team. What a phenomenal group of students, their presence makes the debate community stronger and their outreach efforts, including but not limited to their work with the Detroit UDL, create material improvements in the world around them.
Truly inspiring, stay strong friends!
